Sherlock Holmes
The oldest INTP debate in fiction. The canon quietly disagrees.
Profile. Sherlock has been called INTP for decades. The BBC adaptation made the typing look obvious. But Conan Doyle's original Holmes is a case-builder: he forms a hypothesis, commits to it, and constructs the chain of facts that must follow. That is a different machine.
Function read
Observation feeds a decisive internal model that locks on conclusions — closer to Ni-Te convergence than the open-ended possibility-tree people picture when they say INTP.
The evidence, both sides
Reads as INTJ
- Encyclopedic, niche knowledge systems built for their own sake
- Contempt for social convention and small talk
- Restless mind that needs problems the way lungs need air
- Detachment from emotion as an operating principle
Complicates it
- Once he commits to a theory he pursues it with total, narrow conviction
- His method is eliminative: every fact must fit the chain or the chain breaks
- He pre-plans operations (stakeouts, disguises, traps) and executes them exactly
- Canon Holmes says the gift of foresees consequences — prediction, not exploration
Verdict
This one is genuinely contested — the honest answer is that different adaptations type differently. But canon Holmes reads INTJ to us: a convergent case-builder who commits early and forces the world to match his model. The INTP label sticks because of his eccentric surface, not his cognitive core.
